Why I Love Social Media

As a millennial, social media usage is in my blood. Additionally, as a blogger, I also exploit as many different channels as possible. Consequently, I have really fallen in love with different aspects of social media. I know many people condemn social media for various reasons, above all the presence of cyberbullying, which I do not condone at all. However, cyber bullying aside, I think there are so many positive reasons to use social media. If you are doubtful of social media usage, or a certain platform in particular, read what I have to say and hopefully it will give you a new outlook on the topic!

Inspiration

Above all, I love using social media to find inspiration for pretty much everything. Here I am mostly speaking about Instagram and YouTube, but I often come across inspiration on Facebook and Twitter too. When I say I find inspiration for everything, I really do mean everything. If I am looking for somewhere new to visit, I can scroll through my different feeds and easily find a new vacation destination. If I am in a food rut, I can easily find a helpful recipe tutorial video on YouTube featuring a recipe I never would have thought of on my own. I also go to social media for inspiration if I ever feel stuck about what to write about next here on my blog. There is of course tons of fashion and style inspiration all over the internet. And the list goes on and on. Whatever your interest may be, there is surely someone else out there posting about it, so why not check out Instagram, YouTube, etc. and get inspired!

Staying Connected

I moved away from my hometown in California back in 2010, right after graduating from high school. Since then I have lived in Switzerland. Thanks to social media, I have been able to stay connected with all of my closest friends and family even while being halfway across the world. On top of having friends across the US, I have also gained countless friends across the world as well, so having an easy and fun way to stay connected with them all is so important to me. This is where social media plays an integral part in staying connected with my loved ones. Whether it’s through Facebook or Instagram, I know I can easily reach out to anyone in my network, at anytime. In all honesty, if it weren’t for social media, I probably would not feel as comfortable living away from all my favorite people as I actually do. This is not to say I don’t miss my friends dearly, but I can at least check in on them and see what they’re getting up to even if I’m not physically there in person.

Discovering Something New

Because people all over the globe now use social media, the world has now become even smaller than ever before. By that I mean that with Snapchat, I can see the daily activities of a person living in Thailand or Iceland or some other corner of the world, just by using a simple app. This idea is so cool to me because I can experience a life that is completely different to mine. As someone who enjoys new experiences, I get immense pleasure from social media accounts of people from different walks of life. Whether it’s a new city to add to my travel bucket list, or a completely different lifestyle I have never heard of before, I feel that there is always something new to discover on social media, and all it takes is a bit of scrolling and voilà!
