Happy birthday to me! If you are reading this on June 26, 2017 then it is in fact my 25th birthday. This year I am spending my birthday in California so I was lucky enough to celebrate with my oldest friends and parents. Seeing as today is my special day, I thought it would be the perfect time to write about why I believe it is so important to celebrate yourself.
How many times have you congratulated a friend or loved one on their accomplishments, but then when someone does the same to you, you brush it off as if it was nothing? I feel that we all do this all the time. We graduate from college, get a new job, buy a house, etc. and when it comes to celebrating those accomplishments for others, we often have no problems and do so willingly. So why is it so difficult for us to celebrate our own big moments? I don’t have the answer to that, but I thought I would share some ways I plan on celebrating myself from here on forward. Our relationship with ourselves is after all the most important, therefore we should spend more time and effort taking care of ourselves first and foremost.
Treat Yourself
I think this is one of the easiest ways to celebrate yourself. If you’ve reached a new fitness goal, why not buy a new dress that fits you and shows off your amazing new figure. If you got top grades this past semester, feel free to indulge in that 50 pack of Sharpie pens. Managed to cut down on junk food and finally got around to eating healthier? Go out and buy that shiny new blender you’ve been eyeing! These are all examples of accomplishments we achieve yet tend to ignore, so this is me telling you not to do that! If you set a goal for yourself, why not also set a reward for when you reach it. That way, reaching your goal is that much more exciting!
Take Note
When it comes to achievements, we tend to remember the big moments – graduations, weddings, etc. I’m not saying those things aren’t important, but I just think that we should also take note of those smaller, everyday achievements as well. I am very much into planning and have a slightly unhealthy obsession with my Erin Condren Planner. While I use my planner for my to-do list so while it does serve a functional purpose, I also use it as a memory keeper to take note of smaller events so that when I flip back through it, I can recall those small, special moments.
Celebrate Your Birthday
Celebrating my birthday is something I’ve only recently come to believe in. When I was younger we had pool parties in my backyard so there was always some sort of celebration. But as I moved out of the country and away from friends, it became more and more difficult to plan something for my birthday. Eventually, I stopped trying to get other people together and accepted that I would just not have any big birthday celebrations. Last year was when I decided that this was not the way to go. I now believe that you should celebrate your birthday in anyway you can. It only comes around once a year so why not do something special to acknowledge it. Whether it’s a big party, a weekend trip, or a dinner with close friends, it’s important to celebrate your birthday and remember that you are worth celebrating.
